Steel Cable Belt Repair Training

Posted in: , on 18. Dec. 2014 - 19:49

I have been tasked with starting a belt repair department. We are an underground mine in Colorado, the belt maintenance has been handled by contractors to this point (hot/cold repairs, loop replacements, etc...). My question is: is there any companies out there that can do on-site training to instruct our technicians on repairs best practices? All we want to start with is doing basic hot repairs no larger than 12X12in spots, with the intent that when the good technicians stand out that they will start doing loops and cable inlay repairs. The class information I am hoping to receive is basic steel cable belt construction and hands on training on cutting, laying in material, and cooking. Amy information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, -Matt

Hello Matt

Shaw Almex Industries has many options for training on belt repair and vulcanizing. We are the industry leader in vulcanizer equipment and have been the main OEM for all USA customers . I'm sure that if you have been around any install or repair you have seen or used our equipment. In Colorado there a number of different contractors that offer repair and installation services. If you would like to contact me directly I would be happy to answer any of your questions. please email me direct at brent.fenty@almex.com.

You are asking for a heap of pain frankly as there are not a lot of service providers that can do good hot steel cord repairs let alone you doing it from scratch. As a starting point you need to get hold of the your belt supplier and get all his repair manuals. Some of the better suppliers will also be able to give some training. Then you have to understand the storage protocols for your cements and uncured rubber so that it is always fresh and therefore usable. Next is lots of practice on old belt to make sure you do the work efficiently and correctly (by checking that everything is stuck together) otherwise your production people will be screaming at you because you are taking too long to do the repairs (and this leads to short cuts and failures). Finally you need to know how to look after your equipment so that is it always electrically sound (even heat etc.). The biggest mistake I see when hot repairs are done is that the damage is not cut back far enough to allow for an effective repair to be done (you need to overlay cables along side the broken cables at least 3-4 times the length of the damage), the materials used are not correct or fresh and as a consequence the repairs become purely cosmetic and the same could have been just as easily obtained using cold repair strip to cover the damage. In regard to the loops, that is a bit simpler as all you are doing is removing the top or bottom cover and layering in a new loop section. Once again however you need to be careful as some new loop panels expect you to trim to the top of the cables and have a bonding layer to allow this to be done and others want you to leave a layer of rubber over the cables so you are doing a rubber to rubber bond. All I can say is good luck

Cheers

Gentlemen

This is an old thread that was a duplicate of this one. https://forum.bulk-online.com/showth...air-Department

He didn't come back to review any of the answer he received at that time - so I doubt he will for this one either.

All the best.
