Pipe Conveyor Cleaning Problem

Cleaning problems: using a pipe conveyor for both pet. coke and sulfur

We have a technical problem.

The aim of the project is to transfer both petroleum coke and granular sulfur by a 10km long pipe conveyor.

Therefore a cleaning system shall be included to clean total length of conveyor from one material before loaded by the other.

This needs a large quantity of compressed air and /or water. In other hand, it will result in environmental problems caused by dusty air and waste water especially for sulfur with acidic properties.

What is the efficient way to transfer petroleum coke and granular sulfur by a single pipe conveyor? Can we use different sides of the pipe conveyor belt by using e.g. top side for petroleum coke and bottom side (which is usually return side) for granular sulfur by reverse direction of pipe conveyor?

Dear Sir

I assume you are wanting to take the second material in reverse.

In this case you would turn the belt and use the same carrying surface of the belt. You must therefore have efficient cleaning system of the belt.

Dear Mr. Holt,

Thank you for your kind reply. As you mentioned, even when both directions are used in pipe conveyor, only one side of belt is usually in contact with materials. Is there any technical or practical issue with using both sides of belt to transfer materials? If so, is it possible to omit cleaning system or at least pay less cost for washing system operational costs?

Dear Sir

When you consider the tube form of the belt say either 300mm or 400mm diameter the structure of the belt is a certain way and becomes set !! if you were to form the belt the oposite way i.e. inside out and outside in then the reversing of the belt structure every revolution would cause fatigue failure of the belt in short time so reduce life. It would be more economic to install efficient cleaning system.
