Pipe Conveyor???

I Am Involved In The Aggregate Industry. I am Used To Terms Like, Channel Conveyor, Telescopic Stacker, Truss Conveyor.

Could Someone Provide A Brief Explaination Of A Pipe Conveyor??

Thanks

Concept:

I tried to find you a quick illustration on the websites of:

Koch; Beumer: Mantakraf, Phoenix & ContiTech AG; Krupp.

All these companies are proporting pipe or tubular conveyor design. None provide a clear example of the crossection.

Take a normal fabric or steel cord belt and roll its width into a circle with the bottom three equal length rolls making a 60 degree trough shape for half of the belt width. Then continue to form the remaining belt half into the circle by completing a hexagon with the remaining three equal length rolls with all apexes having 60 degree included angle.

Two examples from CKIT website:

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Pipe Conveyors

AFTER GOING THROUGH THE VERY INFORMATIVE INFORMATION FROM http://www.ckit.co.za AND LOTS OF DISCUSSIONS BY NOBLE EXECUTIVES AND SINCE THE UNDERSIGNED WAS ALSO INVOLVED WITH MY ENGINEERS IN EXECUTING SIMILAR TYPE OF JOB IN INDIA AT BIRLA COPPER, I FOUND SOME MORE ADVANTAGES FOR PIPE CONVEYOR,PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM ON WRONG FOOTINGS.

1.THIS CAN BE USED BOTH WAYS( FOR CARRYING THE MATERIAL FROM POINT A TO B AND WHILE RETURNING CAN DE USED FOR BRINGING THE ANOTHER MATERIAL FROM POINT B TO A)

2.DUE TO LESS CROSS SECTION COMPARE TO CONVENTIONAL TYPE OF CONVEYORS,THE QUANTITY OF STEEL STRUCTURES IN ROOF,GALLERIES AND IN SUPPORTING STRUCTURES ARE 30-40 % LESS BECAUSE OF LESS VARIUOS TYPES OF LOADS.THIS WE HAVE SEEN WHILE DOING PROJECT STUDIES/COSTING FOR SIMILAR TYPE OF SYSTEMS

Oh Wow, So It's A Regular Conveyor Belt, Except It's Literally Turned Into A Moving Rubber Pipe!?!?

That's Pretty Cool.

What Kind Of Applications Are Pipe - Tube Conveyors Used For?

No, its not a regular conveyor belt. It requires special reinforcement to allow and maintain the pipe or tube shape. The reinforcement technology is still evolving as designers practice techniques to hold the shape such as oval verses circular

I thought the papers gave your some thoughts on their purpose such as:

1. navigate tighter turns - vertical and horizontal

2. environmental issues of dust and spillage control

3. make higher lift angles depending on product

May I suggest you search the Bulk Solids Handling website for the various papers on the subject of a pipe conveyors virtues. Keep in mind their is a bit of sales hipe which may overstate their utility in comparison to a conventional conveyor.

Anil,

We share the experience of Birla Copper's pipe conveyor design.

Yes, the pipe can transport both ways as can a conventional belt.

ALthough the pipe can have s slightly smaller crossection, the overall mass of belt and idlers will not result in a loweing of elevated structures or ground modules. THe proof is in obtaining competitive bids.

The pipe will not be cheaper except where the pipe can only navigate the designated path. As many have stated before the pipe conveyor will be 30 to 50% higher.

Pipe Conveyors

The pipe belt looks much like the conventional belt but with some modifications.

The pipe conveyor system can be 30% more expensive or some cases 30% cheaper depending on the specifiction and the system layout.

I don't understand how the pipe conveyor can go vertically, or at angles greater than the angle of sliding friction. Can you clarify?Regards,

Dear Nathan,

We have a picture on our website that shows the pipe forming section, i.e. flat at the pulley and circular at the first pipe forming panel.

http://www.krupprobins.com/

You may wonder where this pipe conveyor shape is used. I will give 3 examples:

One pipe conveyor that we build recently was for a paper mill. Woodchips were to be transported from a new chipper and screen to a silo some 600m away. The straight line conveyor path had buildings and a cooling tower in the way. We ended up building an S-Curve Pipe Conveyor. If we had to do this with 3 conventional conveyors it would have been 30% more expensive.

2 conventional in plant conveyors with 1 transfer tower were quoted, and one pipe conveyor without transfer tower was offered as alternative. The pipe conveyor came out slightly less expensive.

Another installation involved many horizontal and vertical curves following a mountain road over a distance of approx. 3.5km. This conveyor replaced coal trucking to a rail load out station in an environmental sensitive area.

About The Pipe Conveyor

Dear Mr.Nathan,

Imagine a conveyor with receiving & discharge end similar to conventional trougth belt & a pipe shaped in between-is your pipe conveyor.Pipe shape is maintained by hexagonally arranged rollers fixed in a panel board.I tried to attach some sectional drawing, but unbale to attach .This panel are placed at a distance of 1.2m,1.5m....depending upon the dia. of pipe.Various tables are there to calculate the pipe dia.,spacing distance of panel, power calculation etc.Belt is simillar to conventional one.

As regards cost,Mr. Paul&Mr. Ingolf both are very correct that pipe conveyor is sometimes cheaper for specific application.

Regards.
