Material of idlers?

Posted in: , on 21. Feb. 2006 - 12:52

Dear sirs,

I am a mechanical engineer student from the Netherlands, maybe u could help me with acouple of answers.

For my graduation thesis, I need some information about the use of plastics (like polyurethane) for the production of idler rolls. I want to design a one mounted idler for a pipe conveyor.

Questions:

•Is it possible to use plastic idlers (plastic rolls) at high conveyor speeds (5 m/s)?

•If yes? are there companies fabricating such products?

•What are the material properties?

•Is it more economic? (what are the advantages over steel idlers (shells)? Does it pay off the use plastics over steels or other composite materials?

I hope u can help me with this,

Thanks,

with kind regards,

Ask Prof. Grabriel Lodewijks. He should have a well equipped library.

Rise Louise made a plastic roller, African Roller (sic) of South Africa make one - I believe they were purchased by anothers. Other mfgrss have made experiments and may market them.

Google:

Prok Australia

Tytton Australia

Melco Southe Africa

Lorbrand South Africa

Continental Conveyor USA

Precision Pulley USA

FMC USA

Hewitt Robins USA

........

Advantages:

1. noise

2. more accurate shell TIR without machining = higher speed

3. no corrosion except in bearings = use ceramic bearings

Idler Roller Material

Dear Mr sandjay

In addition to advantages indicated by Mr Nordell the main advantage in case of pipe conveyor will be reduction in belt sdgr damage.

In case of pipe conveyors Belt Edge damage due to strucking of belt at matalic edge of roller pipe is observed. In case of plastic rollers with round edge belt edge damage can be minimised

Dear Sirs,

Thanks for the information, this wil certainly help to justify my choice for plastic(pvc or polyurethane).

In the case of the usage of plastic:

*Is it wise to fabricate a massive idler roll, with a 'built in' bearing house? the roll can then be manufactured by one company.

*Is the total mass, of this type of roll, in this case restrictive?

*Or is it better to use seperate components( roll shell and a bearing house) like the standard idlers?with the advantage of a lower total mass.

Edit:

Mister Lodewijks has a busy shedule, only when I am certain of a definite result, I will contact him.

Dear Mr. A. R. Singh,

Where you have installed in INDIA conveyor with palstic idler having 5 m/see belt. speed ?

Please give me ref.

Dear Mr. Kalidien,

I have not seen any conveyor with plastic idler in any steel/ power plant. Once I have seen in a model conveyor having plastic idlers.

We have used plastic iders many times on conveyors subject washdown for cleanliness.

In any materials handling machine a competent designer will select the components according to application

Dear Mr.Singh,

I am fearing that the Nylon rollers may catch fire if they failed to rotate because of any reason ( Bearing failure , Material struck up between brackets and rollers , Poor house keeping etc., ). This may lead to fire accident.

I may be right or wrong. Though polymer rollers have many advantages over Mild Steel Rollers , I am hesitant for using polymer rollers.

Experts are requested to comment on this.

Thanks & Regards,

We use PVC rollers in our operation underground and the material will not sustain a flame.

They will burn if there is a flame on them from another source but remove that flame and they will extinguish on there own. Therefore the rollers themselves cannot cause a fire.

In addition, we have to consider the belt width and the capacity since longer roller will have higher deflection in pipe. But it can be minimized by adding reinforcement inside the pipe.

Dear A R Singh Sir,

Is there any advantage in pastic idler against metalic by manufacturing process as well as cost ?
