Oh man, it has been a while since I had to calculate gears by "hand". Why would you not let a gear box manufacturer let this work do for you? ■

gearbox manufacturers have certain tolerences and it is the no how of their job, and it's a function in many parameters, material properties, machining, design, tolerences and calclations, i don't think it is easy to do it yourself, the formulars you can get easily from the internet just search on gear formuals, but the tolerences are those that make the difference, as far as calc, if you get the formulas you can use excel or use design software ■

Presumably you have to design a gear set rather than a gearbox. AGMA, and others, have classification criteria which will guide you according to your application. The conditions in a helicopter drive are nothing like those for a mill girth ring type of job.
Know your application first & forget Taguchi stuff. Otherwise you'll just go round in circles.

I am selecting that simple gear train (open gearing )without any closed housing,i am going to design housing and planned to do FEA of the housing and finish my project.

DeaR ALL
i WANT to do mini project in gear design.
I need comment about my objective selection and Technic used to solved.
Gear design objective, i got only power ,speed ,service condtion,centre distance range, face width as input details.
Result output is No of teeth,module, centre distance,Factor of safety in bending and wear safety,Alert about undercut
For the solvage of above objective function can we use Taguchi technics?
What software can we use Excel or any need of special calc-software?
