The First German Fire- and Explosion Protection Congress

(Erster Deutscher Brand- und Explosionsschutzkongress)

May 21 - 22, 2014 in Dortmund, Germany

The first “German Brand- und Explosionsschutzkongress“ (Fire- and Explosion Protection Congress) from 21st to 22nd May, 2014 in Dortmund was a huge success. The exciting mix of high quality technical and scientific lectures, experiments and live explosion demonstrations was a bit of a risk – but in the end it was well received.

More than 80 delegates were impressed by the high level of speakers and experts who came together in Dortmund. The Congress was staged parallel to the easyFairs Schüttgut+Recycling-Technik 2014 Exhibition & Conference at Dortmund, Germany (http://www.bulk-online.com/?module=exhibition&id=28) .

The IND EX® hospitality area located outside of DMT´s premises offered them the opportunity to discuss ideas and make suggestions to the experts and the other participants in an unusual setting.

Richard Siwek, Managing Director of the Swiss Company FireEx Consultant GmbH acknowledged world-wide expert of fire- and explosion protection explained: “It has been 2 excellent days. I myself have made a 1000 explosion tests but what we have seen live here in Dortmund had a real relevance to real life situations. Hats off to you!”

Prof. Dr. Uli Barth from the Bergische University Wuppertal was equally enthusiastic: “With the earnings from such events IND EX® supports young academics. Without this financial support from IND EX many research projects would never get off the ground. I find it remarkable that there is a platform here for the latest trends and developments to be introduced.”

On the first day there was not only theoretical input such as new updates to the regulations but also practical sessions so that the participants could have a fresh overview of the current situation in industrial fire- and explosion protection.

In the afternoon there was a trip to DMT Tremonia, the historical test area in Dortmund.

It didn’t stop there. The participants were sent into the fire tunnel to feel first hand how quickly smoke is produced by a burning conveyor belt and how quickly that smoke engulfs everything. The delegates came back truly shaken and needed refreshments.

Of course, IND EX® had arranged for a professional catering company to lay on the finest cuisine.

Then two real dust filters, complete with explosion protection and isolation measures, were brought out into the bright sunshine. Station leader Roland Bunse from Rembe® demonstrated how such parts can be effectively and safely protected. This part was complimented by an explosion suppression demonstration by Christian Wittrock from IEP Technologies who put out a burning cloud of dust as quick as a flash.

With his experiments, Dr Krommes set out to illustrate potential ignition sources and on top of that made some even more impressive explosions using conventional powders such as those found in industrial environments.

"It's so exciting, and this even turns what is a dry subject of explosion protection into so much fun and you get a much better feel for the dangers and effects of an explosion" said Ute Weber of IND EX® about the excursion to DMT.

The first day was rounded off by an invitation from EasyFairs to their exhibitors ball. At this Bavarian themed evening there was an opportunity to try local delicacies and Wheatbeer as well as to talk to the exhibitors. Pure networking.

Sylvia and Günter Lüttgens kicked off the second day with a couple of experiments in the seminar room. They showed quite clearly how an electrostatic ignition source had triggered an event in a German refinery. This was followed by a number of interesting lectures from different angles such as the insurance industry, universities or from vendors which rounded off the event perfectly.

During a communal lunch the delegates were able to draw their conclusions: "We will be there, even if it means that the second round of German Fire and Explosion Protection takes place in Spring 2017" confirmed Peter Tomsic of TRM Filter in Slovenia.

And Stefan Penno, President of IND EX® summarized: "We took a few risks for a first time and all in all the concept worked. Nevertheless, we will improve things for next time and provide some unexpected surprises so it will be worth being there again - those who didn't participate here missed too much.”
