-current production of cement in Sudan is about 380000-400000T/Y

-imported quantities : more than 600000T/Y

-limestone quarries:the analysis indicates a potential reserve enough to produce 1450000T/Y for 137 , which is very huge reserve of a very good quantity

-clay : huge reserve of clay is available within the vicinity of nile river .

-gypsum: is available near the red sea to the north east

-technology: considering the high production capacity needed the most convenient process technology to be used is the short Kiln with preheater and precalciner , due to the high availability of such kilns and the overall economy.

*fixed cost 2.7$/T cement

*direct cost 37.85$/T cement

*initial investment : 161M $

*cement sales price : 100$/T cement (min.)

ATBARA CEMENT FACTORY WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1947 AS A PRIVATE SECTOR SHAREHOLDER COMPANY, AND IT WAS THE FIRST FACTORY OF CEMENT IN SUDAN,IT STARTED WITH SECOND -HAND EQUIPMENT,AND IT BEGAN PRODUCTION IN 1949 AT A PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF 150TON/DAY.IN 1961 , A SECOND PRODUCTION WAS ADDED AT A PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF 450TON/DAY.IN 1972 SOME MODIFICATIONS WERE PERFORMED TO RAISE THE PRODUCTIVITY TO 550TON/DAY.AFTER THE NATIONALIZATION OF THE FACTORY IN 1970,IT WAS ADDED TO THE PUBLIC SECTOR INSTITUTIONS IN 1976,AN AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED WITH THE DANISH GOVERNMENT TO CONSTRUCT THE THIRD LINE AT A PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF 750 TON/DAY.PRODUCTION OF THE THIRD LINE STARTED IN 1994.THE FACTORY IS LOCATED AT ABOUT 2.5Km SOUTH OF ATBARA RIVER TO THE EASTERN COAST OF NILE RIVER.QUARRIES ARE LOCATED 20Km AT WESTERN COAST OF NILE RIVER.RAW MATERIALS ARE TRANSPORTED BY THE LONGEST VACUUM CONVEYOR IN THE WORLD AT A CAPACITY OF 150TON/HOUR.

ATBARA CEMENT FACTORY PRODUCES DIFFERENT TYPES OF CEMENT :-

1- PORTLAND CEMENT

2-SULFATE RESISTANT CEMENT

3-FAST HARDENING CEMENT

ACTUAL PRODUCTION OF THE FACTORY IN 1996 REACHED 230,852 THOUSANDS TONS OF CLINKER,AND 246,464 THOUSANDS TONS OF CEMENT , THAT IS 61% OF THE FACTORY'S DESIGN CAPACITY.
