Heyl & Patterson to Present on Frac Sand Drying at Frac Sand Insider

by David Phillips, Heyl & Patterson, USA

Hydraulic fracturing, also called "fracking" or "fracing," permits access to vast amounts of natural gas that had previously been unreachable. A well is first drilled into a rock formation, and a high-pressure fluid containing a propping agent, or proppant, is then injected into the well. This mixture typically consists of water, sand and a proprietary blend of chemicals. Once injected into the well, the proppant prevents the fracture from closing, which allows the gas to flow freely.

A special fracking sand is the silica-based proppant, and it plays an important part in the fracking process. According to The Wall Street Journal, drillers can gain 30 percent more gas by adding sand to their wells. Based on the success of the fracking process, frac sand use is expected to climb to 95 billion pounds in 2014, a 30 percent jump from 2013. About four million pounds of sand are used at an average frac site.

Frac Job in Progress

The American Petroleum Institute (API) determines frac sand specifications that include grain size, sphericity, crush resistance and solubility. Mining companies are therefore eager to sell only frac sand that meets these API specifications to their well operator customers. To ensure an acceptable quality of sand, mining companies wash and dry it to remove all possible impurities.

The versatile industrial dryers manufactured by Heyl & Patterson are ideally engineered to meet these stringent requirements that sand mining companies must adhere to, in order to consistently provide the highest quality frac sand to their energy producing customers. Our vast experience and innovation in engineering of over a century, and our dedication and attention to detail has consistently produced superior products and services that our customers have come to rely on.

Jeff Morris, Vice President of Heyl & Patterson, will present "Frac Sand Drying" at the 2014 Frac Sand Insider Conference, on Monday, November 17 at 11:00 AM. Heyl & Patterson dryers can be used to dry and treat the sand before it is shipped to the job site and pumped into the ground. There are two types of dryers that can be used for this purpose -- Rotary and Fluid Bed. High tonnage mineral drying is typically performed by convection, using hot air to transfer heat to the sand and water to be dried. Both fluid bed and rotary technologies start with the same basic heat and mass balance calculation, and both types of drying will be discussed at Frac Sand Insider.

The Frac Sand Insider Conference is devoted to sharing operational insights and solutions for the frac sand industry. Presented by Rock Products, a definitive source for industry news, the conference is tailored to both experienced operators and companies just entering the industry. Among the other topics to be discussed at the convention:

• Debunking the Myths of Hydraulic Fracturing and Why we have an Exciting Energy Future

• Frac Sand: View From the Stock Market

• Geological Overview of Frac Sand in the United States

• Managing Rail Assets and Costs

• Easily Improve the Quality & ROI of Proppants with Better Size & Shape Measurement

• Fundamentals of Conveyor Systems and Belts
