Air Control Science®, Inc. becomes licensee for

new passive dust control technology

ACS combines two innovative dust control technologies to optimize results

BOULDER, Colo., December 15, 2004 - Air Control Science, Inc., (ACS) a leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm specializing in dust and fume control in coal-fired power and primary metal industries, has signed an exclusive licensing agreement for a patented technology, Passive Enclosure Control System (PECS™). This system was co-developed by Wyoming-based inventor Alan Weakly. Elements of the PECS design will be combined with Air Control Science's Dustless Transfer® system for which U.S. and foreign patents have been issued. The result will be the most sophisticated passive dust control system today for coal handling.

A PECS transfer installed at a large coal mine operating in the Power River Basin of Wyoming was permitted by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality as "Best Available Control Technology." The system passively controls dust in conveyor-to-conveyor, conveyor-to-bin, and crusher-to-conveyor transfer areas, which helps coal handling power plants and mines to migrate toward the elimination of expensive and hard to maintain dust collection systems or chemical dust suppression.

Combined with the PECS technology, Air Control Science's passive dust control system will include:

• A hood to direct and consolidate the off-loading stream of bulk material (typically coal) to minimize air induction into the enclosure

• A "spoon" to receive this consolidated stream and settle it on the receiving conveyor belt at the proper speed and direction, resulting in less dust generation, air turbulence and belt wear

• Primary and secondary stilling chambers to lower internal air velocities, allowing dust to settle and remain with the material stream

• Staggered curtains at the end of the secondary stilling chamber to lower internal air velocities and keep the dust with the material stream rather than becoming airborne.

"Air Control Science continues to research, develop and answer the needs of our coal handling customers with innovative, passive dust control solutions," said John S. Fischer, Chairman and CEO of Air Control Science. "By combining PECS with our Dustless Transfer, we enhance our ability to control dust emissions, especially when working with hard to handle material such as Powder River Basin coal."

Air Control Science's Dustless Transfer process is incorporated at conveyor transfer points, and in very large coal truck dumps in the mining industry. In a conveyor-to-conveyor transfer, this technology lowered dust emissions in the workspace from 30 mg/m3 to ambient dust readings as low as 0.10 mg/m3 running 1400 tons/hour of Powder River Basin coal.

Air Control Science is a single source for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for materials containment, dust control, washdown systems, and Utility Fire ProtectionSM in the utilities and primary metals industries. ACS helps achieve a cleaner more productive facility that is less likely to incur catastrophic fires or explosions. ACS has designed and implemented Coal Handling Risk Management® solutions in the largest coal-burning power plants in the United States, Australia, Europe and India. The firm's solutions reduce health and safety risks in these environments. Founded by John S. Fischer in 1994, the firm has numerous patents related to safe and effective handling of coal and other bulk materials.
