Screw conveyor failure loading bulk unloading

We have a major problem, we recently started unloading ships with sulphur cargo, however we've been having some cargo that comes with steel scrap. As the unloading equipment is a screw conveyor, the scrap gets stuck on the conveyor and stops the equipment and can cause an explosion.

Have any of you had similar problems? And if so, how have you handle it?

Dear georgesmouline,

Screw conveyors are known to be very sensitive to foreign matter in the product.

Especially strong and hard foreign material like scrap can easily stall e screw unloader.

Removing this material often requires to dismantle the screw unloader, which is a big job, as the counter weight causes extra measurements for keeping the screw arm balanced.

Unfortunately, bulk goods, brought in by sea ships, do often contain this unwanted debris.

The only way to prevent a stuck screw conveyor is by preventing the cargo to be contaminated.

Other, insensitive, methods of Sulphur unloading are grabs or maybe pneumatic unloaders.

Explosions in the screw conveyor are unlikely, as the air/Sulphur mixture does not become explosive in the screw conveyor.

It is known that Sulphur easily is ignited to burn in open air.

I know a few cases, where a cement screw unloader was damaged by foreign material and had to be disassembled for repair.

A mobile pneumatic cement unloader had to unload the remaining cargo of the cement ship and the following cement ships, as the repair of the screw unloader took some weeks.

Have a nice day
