Dust Control for Shiploading

Posted in: , on 9. Apr. 2005 - 07:04

Hi All,

At times, we are forced to load powder cargo into charter ships that are not for powder cargoes. The reasons for this are another matter.

Our loading system is set up for either open hatch of thru a purpose hatch for closed hatch loading (with on board dust control/collection).

Charter ships do not have purpoise made holds/covers for the loading nozzle and also do not have a hold de-dusting system.

We can nut and fit purpose holes in these charter ships at some costs but the de-dusting feature is not provided.

The charter ships usally have hold covers moving in the direction along the ship - part in the middle and rack/stack at either end.

The holds can be up to 17m wide.

I was wondering - as I had seen something - if we could partially open the hold covers - wheel on a tent like structure over the gap with a port hole for the nozzle and also a port for the de- dusting system and dust return.

I recall seeing something for the USA barges with a cover that allows weat weather loading.

Has anyone seen this porblem before and how it was handled.??

Thanks

James

Bulk carriers usually have cement loading / dusty cargo loading holes inbuilt into the hatch covers. Thes "holes" are usually about 500 mm in diameter. Portable dustcollectors are put in these opening and are quite effective.

Hello James,

I am responding to your question about the possibility of fabricating a "tent" structure that will be able to vent the port hole during the loading of dust on ships, yet also be wet weather proof. This idea is very interesting, and may be something we at Gore can help you with.

If you are familiar with W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., then you are most likely familiar with Gore-Tex (r) Fabric that is used in outerwear for various activities such as skiing, backpacking, etc.. Gore-Tex fabric both water proof and breathable. Gore is also the technology leader in industrial dry filtration. We are the industry leader when it comes to efficiency and life of industrial filters. There may be a way for us to combine our technological capabilities in both water proof materials and industrial filtration, as a means of developing a solution to your dust control situation.

I suggest contacting Cindy Lubin, one of our associates involved in unique applications such as this one. Cindy will be able to gather some additional information, and then work with our engineers to help determine if we have a solution. I have included Cindy's contact information below. Feel free to contact me, If you have difficulty contacting Cindy.

When partially opening hatch covers of Magregor type, like the ones you are describing, the hatch cover pontoons have to be first raised a few cm on to concentric rollers which are fitted on the sides of the pontoons to allow them to be rolled open. This means that the seal between the hatch coaming edge and the joining edge of the partially open hatchcovers will no longer be airtight. Even though the open portion of the hold may be covered by a canopy of some sort, there will probably be dust escaping at the closed portion at the hatch cover joining edge as described.

Salam Kassim,

Yes I am aware of this, hence, we need to have a dust extraction system fitted as well and the main gap cover.

The Gore soultion sounds OK

I have seen somewhere a readymade/purposed designed cover with a port for the loading chute - can not recall at present.

Thanks

Dear Sirs,

We have pleasure to inform you that we are manufacturing speciality

chemicals for various industrial applications. We have Dust

Suppression products range 'DUSTRON' for the DUST SUPPRESSION in

mining operation for haulage road in open cast mines and for the bulk

material handling systems.

We have a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Central Mining

Research Institute (CMRI) Dhanbad, India which is a part of Council

of Scientific & Industrial Research Govt. of India. CMRI is the world

recognised Institute for the research in the field of mining

operation.

The following products are approved and accepted by the Indian Mining

Industries since last 10 years for better environmental and mining

conditions.

1. DUSTRON PC Compound: For the open cast mines haul road where the

dust emission is because of HEAVY EARTH MOVERS of high capacity

trucks Dozzer, Tippler etc. DUSTRON PC is used for various class of

mines in India for dust suppression in the mines as under.

(1) Iron Ore Mines

(2) Zinc Mines

(3) Lime Stone Mines

(4) Copper/Chromite Mines

2.DUSTRON PC COAL : For the open cast mines haul road of collieries,

railway sidings and coal jetty's road of the ports.

3.DUSTRON PC LIGNITE : For the haulage roads of lignite open cast mines.

4.DUSTRON XT : This product is used for the dust suppression of bulk

material handling system where at the transfer point crusher house,

dumper platform dust emission is heavy, so along with water spray

DUSTRON XT is used to control dust emission.

5.DUSTRON XT COAL : For bulk material handling system of conveyors,

dumper platform, wagon tipplers of open cast/ under ground mines,

Thermal power plants and coal jetty on the port trust.

All the above products are used in Indian mining industries to control

dust for better environment & working conditions which produce no. of

advantages.
