spend as much as you can get back......

Most of the industrial raw material are low cost items and importers and exporters do not want to spend big money as handling cost. do look at the existing costs or costs at nearby ports add benefit due to the new system and look at the paying capacity of the users. then decide your capital cost and then look at what you can get in that budget and you have many choice. HMC is the chaepest crane they work well and can be put to diverse use. Conveyors and wagon loaders/ Wagon tipplers can be selected based on permitted unloading/loading time by Railway.

look at the addon's that a user will like to have and willing to pay for (blending, transshipment facility)

Commercial considerations are as important as other factors while deciding and designing a material handling system.

say you do not need 3 HMCs when you are handling a mix of handymax and panamax vessels. atleast have a 4500-5000 tph loading unloading system grab unloaers or continious unloaders when you have to handle capevessels.for vessels up to Panamax size even 40000 tpd is okay.

Gentleman, As far as cost of raw material is concern, I am with you but, if the ship has to wait for one day at port due to poor performance/capacity of ship loaders/unloaders then client has to pay between 65-70,000 US $ per day. This add to the price of raw material,so the importers and exporters has to take this point in to consideration.

Yes,using mobile Harbour Crane is the best option, but if you are using 3 MHC on a 200-220 m long jetty suitable for Panamax vessel, you will find very less space to move around the jetty, the other very good option shall be to use floating harbour cranes to load/unload the material.By using floating Harbour cranes you will save 40-50% in the cost of jetty construction(because there is no load for MHC on jetty) and also use these cranes for transhippment also.

Again in India, the clients wanted to evacuate CAPE size vessel in one day.I think in this case client has to go for CONT. TYPE LOADERS/UNLOADERS
