Unloading and Stock Piling of Petroleum Coke

Posted in: , on 24. Jan. 2007 - 14:08

Good Day Forum Members

I am getting engaged in a project which will involve the ship unloading of petroleum coke and the need to stock pile then reclaim the material.

Is there a source of reference which you can recommend that llustrates the various technologies and methodologies available.

Coke unloading rates will be in the range of 800-1200 stph and I would estimate a stock pile capacity of 85-90,000 standard tons.

Dear Jack, From the unloading rate which you have mentioned seems that ship is of small size between 25-40000 t .These are the following technologies available for unloading the coke-

1. By cont. type unloaders.

2. By Mobile Harbour Cranes.

3. By Mobile Track mounted grab cranes Unloaders.

Now, since your unloading capacity is less, going for cont.type unloaders is not adviseabe because these eqipments are very costly and needs more mantainence. Now, you have two options left, either to go for Mobile Harbour cranes or for Mobile Track mounted grab cranes. If ,you are going for Mobile harbour cranes then in that case you have flexibility for loading and unloading of the various materials and these cranes are cheaper then other two,if you are going for Mobile Track mounted grab cranes then in that case you will loose flexibility and also pay more then Mobile Harbour Cranes.

Please let us know if you need our services to freeze conceptual layout, freezing tech.specifications of the entire system. We are enganged with a Dutch consultant in India for developing India's largest coal unloading terminal. We have referances of US based cos. also.

Conveying ,stockpiling, reclaiming and despatch-Now from the unloading jetty you can move your material by a single conveyor and stack the same by stacker/reclaimer,depending upon your despatch capacity and land size available you can go for 4 nos. of stackers/reclaimers,2 nos. each on 2 rows.

Coke Handling

Posted on 14. Feb. 2007 - 09:35

Hi,

I have experience with unloading, storing and handling calcined coke. A rate in excess of 1000 TPH will require a lot of dust collection and require big belts. A rate of 750 TPH is more econmical in terms o fthe capital cost. Remember that the density is quite low. We have installed Ship unloaders (mechanical), bucket type running at 700 ft/min. and had great success. We worked on Alcan and Alcoa facilities.

Please contact me if you need further assistance. We are a consulting engineering firm that offers services from projewct planning to EPC.

Hi Jack. I have been unloading and loading ships for 15yrs. We deal in coke, coal, ore, slag, millscale, sand and clinker. The material you are asking about we give a guarantee of 1000MT/hr. We work for many companies on the Great Lakes; USS,SeverStal,OPG,Stelco,Dofasco,C&P (Conneaut), St.Marys Cement,PM Coal, Mid-Continent and many more. We generally use conveyors (stackers) and ruber tire loaders. We have an extensive fleet of equipment out of our Hamilton, On and our Saginaw MI. departments. I am assuming that since you are out of PA. that your boats are on the Great Lakes or in the St. Lawrence? We also have a Stevedoring Division with cranes. Do you know if your vessels are self unloading Lakers or are they Saltys?

If you have any questions you can contact me at akhastings@sympatico.ca

Dear Mr. Jack Hilbert,

It seems you are unloading the material by pneumatic unloader and then your concern is about the stacking, reclaiming and dispatch of the material. The facility main parameters will be governed by following issues :

- Frequency of incoming material

- Unloading rate of the incoming material

- Frequency of the outgoing material

- Handling rate of the outgoing system

- Required stock pile as a consequence of inflow and outflow of the material

- The investment available amount will have an influence on the type of equipment. Some customers prefer excellent system even though it might be somewhat costly. Some customers have a constrain and they want to opt for most economical system even though it may not be up to the mark, demanding more attention in maintenance etc. Therefore, type of equipment etc. will depend upon the same.

- Land layout.

In this day & age pet coke will have to be sucked out of the hold & taken to silos by tube belt. You have no environemtal options in most lands.

thanks for all the replies and input

the project is proceeding using an e-crane to dock mounted hopper feeding a tube conveyor to storage domes.

all the advice is greatly appreciated

Hi Jack, Please provide the storage capacity of the dome, earlier you were thinking to store in open stackyard.Your system can be as follows--

1.The e-crane shall unload the material in to mobile hopper/hoppers,the outlet of mobile hopper shall consist of flat gate and vibro feeder.

2. Provide flat conveyor(trough type) below the mobile hoppers.

3. This conveyor shall feed the material to a stationary silo,up to this silo the conveyor shall be flat.

4.Now, at the outlet of this stationary silo provide the same system as mentioned above and then feed it to pipe conveyor, this pipe/tube conveyor shall be flat min.15-20 m at the feeding end and at the discharge end.

5. This conveyor shall discharge the material in dome silo, there are so many types of storage and extracting systems .Please provide us the capacity of dome.

What Is Petroleum

Posted on 5. Dec. 2008 - 11:50

Petroleum coke is used as a raw material for many carbon and graphite products. These products include furnace electrodes and liners and the anodes used in the production of aluminum.
