Which Grinding Media?

Posted in: , on 28. Dec. 2008 - 00:22

I'm currently working on a university project involving sulphur powder being crushed in a dry ball mill so I'm pretty new to the ball milling process. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to reduce Sulphur powder from 500 microns to around 10 microns in a ball mill but I'm finding it hard to select a suitable grinding media.

At the moment it is only for a lab scale test so I've decided to go for 3 sizes: 3, 6 and 10mm to see what kind of results I will get. Do you think that is a good range? Or are they a bit too big?

Also, because there are so many variations of balls (ceramic, steel etc) I'm finding it hard to select the right material. What type of grinding media would be suitable?

I know sulphur is used in black powder so is there any risk of explosion if steel balls are used?

Regards

Simon

Thanks for your help.

It will be a batch process as I only need about 10kg in around 6 hours.

I have found a company that can supply ceramic grinding media but not too sure about ceramic rods. I will have to check it out

OK, that is a lot less volume than I am used to working with (Think TONS!) I would say a mix of ceramic balls would work well for this application. If you have any further questions let me know.

I would say the size range of media should work well for you. I would typically suggest using ceramic, and if you have the media available to you a ceramic rod. What rate of grinding are you trying to achieve and is the process going to be a batch or continuous? The reason I ask is you may need a classifier after ball milling to get the right size cut of the final product.

Let me know if you have any more questions,
