Innovative Weighing Solutions for Bulk Solids

Quality, reliability, innovation and outstanding customer service have made Thames Side Sensors a worldwide leader in Industrial and Process weighing load cell technology.

Now part of the family owned Tecnicas Group, among the top five companies in global load cell manufacture, Thames Side Sensors Ltd has its origins in the 1970s. With headquarters in Reading, UK, and offices, sales partners and customers in over 60 countries in every kind of process industry the Company has a truly global presence.

Over 30 years of supplying the world's process industries in sectors as varied as offshore, cement, food, pharmaceuticals, minerals, metals, plastics and others has given Thames Side an unrivalled, extensive, applications knowledge which allows customers to be properly advised on the correct selection and application of their products.

Thames Side's state of the art manufacturing facilities are located in Barcelona, Spain with an additional factory located in Morocco. All load cells are manufactured under strict quality control with full traceability and each and every one is individually tested to ensure its performance. Components and raw materials are sourced from world class manufacturers with an emphasis on quality. Thames Side Sensors is fully committed to quality and has ISO9001:2008 certification. Confidence in their manufacturing methods allows the Company to offer up to 5 year warranty against manufacturing defects on the majority of their products.

Thames Side Sensors provides the ultimate in load cells and loading assemblies for tank, vessel, silo, process and truck/axle weighing applications as well as for incorporation into many types of process machinery. Mounting assemblies, which are designed in accordance with Eurocode 3 practices, form a crucial part of the weighing system. Use of the latest Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software pinpoints the optimum design of assembly for correct operation and rigorous manufacturing and test procedures ensure total reliability under the harshest of conditions. The innovative mounting assemblies, which incorporate the load cell, provide a simple but complete mechanical link between the weighing structure and support base, removing the need in many applications for additional tie bars or other restraints. Options of special anti-corrosive load cell coatings to provide additional protection in extreme environments where stress corrosion could occur and high temperature load cells for operation up to 150°C, are just a couple of examples that set them apart from the rest.

Process Vessels

For process vessels up to 20t gross weight, the company recommends its patented LeverMount® mounting assembly which incorporates a high accuracy single ended shear beam or bending beam load cell in a unique cast 316 stainless steel mount which allows installation and removal of the load cell under load without the need for jacks or special tools. The patent covers the use of the load cell as a lever (hence 'LeverMount®') to lift the top plate of the assembly into the weighing position during installation. Massive savings in installation costs and much reduced downtime in the event that the load cell needs to be replaced are significant 'cost of ownership' benefits. The fact that the assembly can be fitted to the vessel without the load cell in position and all other installation work such as welding (which can severely damage load cells) can take place prior to the installation of the cell, minimizes the potential damage to the load cell during the installation process.

In 2011, Thames Side established a subsidiary in Mumbai, Thames Side Sensors India Pvt. Ltd, selling premium quality load cells from 5kg to 1000t capacity. The Indian subsidiary carry a significant stock and delivers the load cells immediately on order in Indian currency.

Three sizes of LeverMount® cover weighing ranges up to 200kg, 2000kg and 5000kg per support point with load cell capacities available from 5 kg upwards. Other features include stable 3 point mounting, allowance for expansion and contraction, substantial lift-off prevention and a large clearance under the loading area to avoid build-up of waste material affecting the weighing accuracy; these make the LeverMount® an attractive solution for solids process vessels.

Large Tanks & Silos

Following on with the themes of reduced ‘cost of ownership’ and ease of installation, Thames Side Sensors has introduced the patented MasterMount® assembly for large tanks & silos.

Incorporating a stainless steel, fully welded, double ended shear beam load cell in a range of capacities up to 30 tonnes, the special design of the MasterMount® casting allows the load cell to be installed and removed under load in a few minutes, with only a socket wrench. Incorporating a special stainless steel cam mechanism to apply the load on the load cell, the MasterMount® also has a number of innovative features including the absence of fiddly pins, clips or washers and allowance for expansion & contraction of the vessel. A substantial lift-off prevention capability through the mount itself rather than the traditional pin under the load cell, means that reverse shock loading, caused by wind trying to lift the vessel (which can damage the load cell) is eliminated. As the cam mechanism can be operated when the vessel or tank is full, even with up to 20 tonnes load per cell, there is also a huge potential cost saving if a load cell needs to be replaced or removed whilst other work is done on the system.

For larger capacity silos and tanks, our model VC3500 range of stainless steel double ended shear beam load cells, with either durable painted, galvanized or stainless steel mounting assemblies, are a low profile, accurate solution. The design of the mounting assembly incorporates substantial lift-off resistance. This design has been extensively used in the Oil and Gas industry for drilling mud weighing and storage applications with over 4000 high capacity cells being supplied over the last 5 years for use on oil rigs, onshore oil installations and drill ships.

Thames Side's model T30 column load cell has found favour particularly in the cement and minerals processing industries for very large silos, even those above 2000 tonnes capacity. The compact design incorporates a fully integrated mounting assembly with built in features such as allowance for expansion and contraction of the vessel and misalignment of the support structure as well as integral lift-off prevention, features not seen in any other column load cell.

Cost Effective Level Measurement

Typically, load cells have been considered as an expensive option for applications where level measurement is the main criteria and very accurate weight of the vessel or tank contents is not required.

However, Thames Side has a very cost effective low profile load cell assembly with a 1000 division accuracy which can be used for gravimetric level measurement, particularly for bulk solids where the traditional solutions such as radar, ultra-sonic or mechanical systems suffer from performance, reliability and maintenance issues.

The Model T20 stainless steel compression load sensor is mounted in either a zinc plated or stainless steel low profile, extremely compact mounting assembly that has integral jacking to allow load cell installation and removal, lift-off prevention and allowance for angular mis-alignment. The design is suited for use as either a totally live system with load cells under all legs of the vessel or, where cost is paramount, in a dummy system with either one live and two dummy cells or two live and two dummy cells. Available in capacities from 2.5t to 30t and in two body sizes, with the larger 20/30t assembly having a footprint of just 218 x 150mm and a height of 100mm, the T20 load cell is finding many bulk solids vessel storage applications including plastics, biomass, pharmaceuticals, food and chemicals. A typical system incorporates load cells, a junction box and a display instrument. Add a 5 year warranty and IP68/IP69K hermetically sealed construction and this is a particularly appealing package for level measurement applications.
