Order from Codelco:

Siemens takes over maintenance of an ore crusher and conveyor belt system in the Radomiro Tomic opencast mine in Chile

Erlangen, Germany, December 13, 2010 - Siemens Chile S.A. has received an order from Codelco Norte, a Chilean mining company, to take over additional maintenance work in the Radomiro Tomic opencast mine. The project involves Siemens maintaining the ore crusher and conveyor belt system for an initial period of six years. The value of the order is around 20 million US dollars. Siemens has already been responsible for the maintenance of the hydrometallurgic facilities in Radomiro Tomic since August 2008.

Codelco (Corporacin Nacional del Cobre de Chile), is the world's largest copper producer, extracting around 1.7 million tons per annum. The Codelco Norte Division includes the Chuquicamata and Radomiro Tomic opencast mines near Calama in the Antofagasta Region. Together, they extract more than half of Codelco's total copper production. The Radomiro Tomic opencast mine was opened up in the 1990s, and lies around 3000 meters above sea level.

This year, a new ore crusher was installed in Radomiro Tomic to crush the sulfidic copper ore mined there, and a conveyor belt system was constructed to transport the ore to the processing plant in Chuquicamata. Siemens will be responsible for maintaining the mechanical and electrical components, as well as for the instrumentation of the ore crusher and the conveyor belt system, and will handle the planning, scheduling and performance of all the maintenance tasks. Since 2008, some 140 Siemens employees have been maintaining the mine's hydrometallurgic facilities, which include the leaching, solvent extraction and electrolysis plants.
