Demag Cranes supplies 22 AGV automated container transport vehicles to Rotterdam

New AGVs replace first-generation vehicles

Significant reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions

Düsseldorf, Germany, August 12, 2011 - Gottwald Port Technology GmbH (Gottwald), a subsidiary of Demag Cranes AG, is supplying 22 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to Europe Container Terminals (ECT) in Rotterdam, a long-term customer. Gottwald's type CT 60 AGVs are to replace the first- generation container transporters which have been in operation around the clock as part of the AGV fleet at the customer's facility since the early 1990s. The new AGVs are equipped with fuel-saving diesel-electric drives and comply with the European EuroMot IIIB exhaust gas standard that has been in force since 2011.

Thomas H. Hagen, Member of the Management Board and COO of the parent company Demag Cranes AG emphasises: “By consistently continuing to develop the drive technology used in our transport systems for horizontal container transport, we are making a key contribution to optimising automated maritime ports. The future-orientated drive concepts for our AGVs contribute sustainably to reductions in harmful emissions and support our customers as they progress along the path towards the green port.”

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

The AGVs developed by Gottwald are for automated container transport from the quayside to the stackyard. To date, the company has equipped three large maritime terminals with AGVs. It was together with its customer ECT that Gottwald developed the first automation concept for horizontal container transport back in the 1980s. This meant that the ECT Delta Terminal in Rotterdam was the first container terminal worldwide to be equipped with a complete fleet of Gottwald AGVs.
