Static Hazards – are you safely grounded?

For over 30 years Newson Gale has been supplying the chemical and processing industry worldwide with a range of static control products ensuring people and plant are protected from static related fires and explosions.

Visit us at POWTECH 2013 – Hall 1, Stand 216, where Newson Gale GmbH will be displaying their comprehensive range of static control equipment which is designed to help industries combat the risks associated with dangerous static discharges in hazardous areas.

Incidents leading to fires and explosions in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries are unfortunately all too common and are reported in the safety and process media with alarming frequency. Such incidents can result from a variety of ignition sources, but one particularly tricky energy source to tie down is static electricity – or to be precise, uncontrolled electrostatic discharge in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The energy contained in a typical static discharge is capable of igniting many sensitive combustible powders and dusty atmospheres, as well as most flammable liquid vapors and gases.

The most effective way to control static hazards is via grounding and bonding which connects conductive or static dissipative materials to zero (earth) potential, but this can be difficult to achieve in many common applications because of various factors:

•Insulating surface coatings, product build-up and corrosion

•Ineffective or inappropriate grounding devices (clamps, connectors, cables)

•High resistance bonding to earth

•Incorrectly installed grounding conductors and electrodes

•Operator error or failure to follow procedures.

The Newson Gale range of static grounding and bonding equipment provides innovative, cost-effective and practical solutions to these problems, offering safety, reassurance and control capability for virtually all hazardous area manufacturing, processing and handling operations.

Newson Gale grounding and bonding applications

Cen-Stat®

Grounding devices comprise ATEX certified and FM Tested clamps, cable assemblies and reels and are typically used in simple applications where there are well controlled operating procedures – for example transferring flammable or combustible materials between metal containers, drums and IBCs.

Bond-Rite®

The Bond-Rite® product range with intrinsically safe self-testing clamps and monitoring units provide the user with visual verification of a low resistance bond (<10 Ω) to a designated ground point. Units are approved for use in all ATEX Zones – 0, 1, 2 & 20, 21, 22 and versions are available for use in permanent installations or mobile operations.

Earth-Rite®

Static grounding systems that provide interlock/control capability, meaning that a process or operation may not commence until the required grounding procedure has been carried out and there is a safe static dissipative path to ground for any charge, that would otherwise accumulate. Earth-Rite® systems are designed for all hazardous area manufacturing and handling processes, including transfer of flammable or combustible materials to or from drums, IBCs Road Tankers and Rail Cars; filling or discharging from Conductive or Static Dissipative FIBCs and containers; and multiple point monitoring and grounding of processing equipment such as fluid bed dryers, conveyors and filling machines.
