CLOSING REPORT: POWTECH and TechnoPharm 2011 send positive signals

• Exhibitors report good order situation and full order books

• 15,498 trade visitors from 70 countries travelled to Nürnberg

Three days, 1,005 exhibitors (2010: 956 exhibitors), over a dozen branches of industry, 15,498 trade visitors* (2010: 16,490 visitors) and lots of new products – this was POWTECH and TechnoPharm 2011 in Nürnberg. “Our exhibitors again summed up the events favourably and particularly stressed the quality of the visitors and the firm inquiries in many talks,” says Claudia Hauser-Vollrath, Exhibition Manager of POWTECH/TechnoPharm at NürnbergMesse.

In surveys conducted by an independent market research company, more than 65 per cent of the visitors confirmed that POWTECH or TechnoPharm is the only event in their exhibition calendar, which underlines the great market penetration and the importance of the two technology trade fairs. Due to the exceptionally good order situation in the plant segment, the organizers assume that many companies have released fewer employees for the trip to Nürnberg. “When production must go on to meet delivery times,” says Claus Rättich, Member of the Management Board of NürnbergMesse, “it is difficult to allow even one more member of staff to attend.”

POWTECH shows a large number of innovations

One focus at POWTECH 2011 was the optimization of basic mechanical processing technologies: from size reduction and mixing to drying. Innovative drying processes – like microwave freeze drying – open up highly innovative possibilities especially for the pharmaceutical and food industries. At the same time, the recovery of solvents, optimized heating and cooling, and thus considerably improved process control, increase the efficiency of plants and so cut costs. POWTECH 2011 proved once again that mechanical processes have always been designed for extremely economical use of energy and are one of the efficiency drivers in process technology.

Particularly this high rate of innovations makes this 18-monthly exhibition exceptionally interesting for experts from many branches worldwide and the relevant marketplace for exhibitors. One in three of the 704 POWTECH exhibitors in 2011 came from abroad. Apart from Germany (483), the following countries were traditionally strongly represented: Italy (44), Switzerland (34) and Great Britain (25). The POWTECH exhibitors came from altogether 29 countries. The majority of the companies received visitors from the following branches of industry: chemicals (77 %), food/food and feed manufacturers (68 %) and pharmaceuticals (52 %). A new or improved product was shown on three out of four stands at POWTECH. Nine out of ten exhibitors were satisfied with the overall success of their presence at the exhibition and 94 per cent made new business connections.

The POWTECH visitors travelled to Nürnberg from all over the world, but the top countries for visitors are all in Europe: Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The visitors said they were mainly interested in the following product groups: ‘plant engineering and processing components’ (62 %), ‘basic processing technologies for powder and bulk solids’ (49 %), ‘measurement and control’ (20 %), ‘safety and environmental technology’ (16 %), and ‘particle analysis and characterization’ (15 %; multiple answers were possible). 93 per cent of the visitors influence procurement decisions in their company and 98 per cent returned home satisfied with the products on display at the exhibition.

TechnoPharm faces up to GMP** challenges

Pharmaceutical production is undergoing radical changes. The necessity for higher efficiency on the one hand and regulatory requirements on the other create an enormous innovation potential for all GMP-compliant processes and workflows. TechnoPharm 2011 showed how energy or solvent recovery, sparing use of resources, explosion protection and other measures to improve safety and efficiency – which are already standard in other branches of industry – can also be implemented under GMP requirements.

The exhibition also focused on cleanrooms, one of the essential elements for GMP-compliant production conditions. The pharma, life sciences, chemical, biosciences, food and health food industries as well as research and service companies increasingly use operating conditions with exactly defined parameters. TechnoPharm 2011 therefore attached special importance to cleanroom technology, with the Cleanroom Village (43 exhibiting companies) and the CleanRoomCongress (some 20 top lectures on three days). A total of 114 exhibitors at the combined exhibitions showed cleanroom solutions.

19 per cent of the 301 exhibitors at this year’s TechnoPharm travelled from abroad. The TechnoPharm exhibitors came from altogether 16 countries. The top 3 branches of industry for visitors on the stands of TechnoPharm exhibitors were pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food. Four out of five exhibitors in Nürnberg showed a new product or an improvement of existing products. 88 per cent rated their overall success at the exhibition as satisfactory to very good and nine out of ten exhibitors made new business connections at the event.

The visitors interviewed said the most interesting product groups were ‘production’ (61 %), ‘filling and packaging technology’ (57 %), ‘cleaning, hygiene and environment monitoring’ (29%), and ‘laboratory and development’ (25 %, multiple answers were possible). 96 per cent of those interviewed after visiting the Cleanroom Village felt they were well-formed. The interviewees among the 182 participants at the CleanRoomCongress (organizers are the International Association for Pharmaceutical Technology (APV) together with Concept Heidelberg) were agreed: 97 per cent rated the congress positively.

Explosive issues firmly under control

The successful INDEX SAFETY CONGRESS (ISC) on Explosion Protection was continued. The event parallel to the exhibitions combined scientific papers on brand-new research findings with presentations on new developments of products and solutions. The programme enhanced with live demonstrations and experimental lectures attracted 166 participants to Nürnberg. The organizer of the congress is INDEX (Intercontinental Association of Experts for Industrial Explosion Protection).

4th Innovation Award at POWTECH/TechnoPharm 2011

The three trade journals PROCESS, PharmaTEC and Schüttgut presented the Innovation Awards at POWTECH and TechnoPharm 2011 for the 4th time. The awards went to the most innovative plants and processes in the chemical, pharmaceutical and processing industries. The jury of experts announced the winners at an official award ceremony on the first evening of the exhibition. “The large number of entries again this year impressively shows how innovative many process outfitters are and how they secure a good position in the market with highly interesting further developments and innovations,” emphasized chief editor and publisher Gerd Kielburger in his speech. More information about the award is available at: http://www.process.vogel.de

Outlook on events in 2013

It has already been decided to reallocate the halls at the next POWTECH and TechnoPharm. “There is an unusual accumulation of public and school holidays in Germany in May 2013. We must therefore decide whether to choose a date in May that includes a public holiday, or move to a date in April, which would need a new combination of halls due to the high level of site utilization in April. We have decided to use a new hall allocation and are already working with our customers on finding the best possible stand positions for them. We will, of course, cover the changed hall allocation in detail in visitor information material for 2013,” promises Hauser-Vollrath.

NOTE THE DATE: The next POWTECH and TechnoPharm and the PARTEC Congress take place from 23–25 April 2013.

The next events in the POWDER & BULK NETWORK:

Powder & Bulk Solids India, Ahmedabad, India (13–15 March 2012)

BulkSolids Europe, Berlin, Germany (11–12 October 2012)

International Powder & Bulk (IPB), Shanghai, China (17–19 October 2012)

WCPT7, Peking, China (19–22 May 2014)
