About Kiyoshi Horii

Biography:
16 Sept. 1943 in Tokyo
Kiyoshi HORII received his B.S. (1967), M.S. (1969) and Ph. D. (1975) in Chemical Engineering at Waseda University.
Became assistant researcher at Waseda University after receiving Ph.D. He joined the faculty of general education at the Shirayuri Women's College [Catholic University] in 1978 as an Associated Professor after a one year faculty position at Okinawa University. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1986.
He is an active member of Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers [Chair of Technical Committee 1997], Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers [A committee member of FASTC], The Japan Society of Multiphase Flow [Board member 1997-8, Chair of Academia- Industry Liaison Committee 1999-2002], The Japan Petroleum Institute and The Society of Powder Technology.

Know-how and experience:
The activities have been mostly devoted to the industrial applications of the spiral flow. Worked on several basic research project of dynamic aspect of the spiral flow during 1978-1983, and got U.S. and United Kingdom Patents for an unit generating a spiral flow (U.S.PAT 47211260, U.K.PAT 2180957).
Since 1984, initiated a nontraditional development of spiral flow generating units for controlling turbulence to improve the focusing control for dispersion of submicrone powder, focusing and stability control of plasma jet, water jet cleaning, orientation control of whiskers for producing new composites, transportation of optical fiber through 2000m-long tubes, and stability control of burners' flames during windy condition on oil platforms.
