Thermal Effect on Silos

Hi all, i am new.

I want to ask the thermal effect on silos.

According to Eurocode, there are two types of behaviour. First occurs bendin moment (gradient) and second occurs additional horizontal pressure on silo verticak wall. There is no any information about case 1. There is a formula to define additional horizontal pressure for case 2 but this pressure value is very high due to my calculaion. Even this value is bigger tyhan material pressure of symmetrical filling or discharge situation. It is not acceptable for me.

According to ACI-313, only mentioned the bendin moment due to temperature differantiation (inner hotter than outer).

So there is problem for you and me. How can take the thermal effect on silo;

can i take this effect as bending moment or additional horizontal pressure?

Please give me some information about this subject.

Best Regards.

Okey you all,

I hav examined this subject again and obtained some results;

1- Uniform temperature effect - sudden changing at outside temperature with constant inside temperature (cause additional normal pressure tou the wall).

2- Temperature differantion between hot solids and outside temperature with constant inside and outside temperature(cause bendin moment for lateral reinforcement at the outside)

3- Temperature differantion between cooler solid and filling hot solid at the top of cooler solid surface with constant outside temperature (cause bending moment for vertical reinforcement at the inside)

I think thermal effect on silo was solved for me but please check this information for the perfect experience.

Hi

Please remember, a design code is always telling you what to do and never tells you how to do it.

Have a look on the handbook of peter & martens (Germany) they show you what is to do with the load cases temperature changes and temperature differences, summer, winter, hot material inside and so on.

I can tell you this is not so easy but in the end, the load case temperature does not give you so high loads!

Best regards
