Eriez Reduce Maintenance at Municipal Solid Waste Plant

An Eriez Series 7000 Suspended Electromagnet has been installed at Lundell Manufacturing, a long time builder of recycling systems for the recovery of ferrous metals.

One of Lundell’s solid waste facilities where municipal solid waste is converted into a processed engineered fuel was experiencing downtime & excessive costs due to conveyor maintenance. At the plant, waste is tipped from trucks and loaded on to a conveyor where material is pre-sorted to remove bulky and non-compatible materials. The remainder is discharged onto an elevated sorting belt where workers remove recyclables, which are then dropped onto receiving conveyors that remove materials to separate balers. In Lundell’s original process, material was then fed over a series of conveyor belts to capture ferrous metals through redundant passes over magnetic pulleys. Whilst this was an effective process, it was one that required a significant amount of maintenance.

To reduce maintenance issues Lundell installed a series 7000 Eriez Suspended Electromagnet, positioned over the municipal waste, to remove the ferrous metals from the flow. Eriez Suspended Electromagnets are of a robust design to withstand harsh conditions and heavy duty applications and are also of a reliable and durable construction. They are available in various sizes and suit many conveyor belt widths and are available in a manual or self clean model.

Typical Self Clean Suspended Electromagnet Installation

Eriez Manual Clean Suspended Electromagnets must be periodically turned off in order to discharge iron accumulated on the face of the magnet. They are suitable for applications where only occasional tramp iron is expected and are usually suspended from a travelling trolley so they can be swung clear of the conveyor before the iron is released.

Eriez Self Clean Suspended Electromagnets, like the one installed by Lindell, provide continuous, automatic removal of tramp iron and feature a heavy duty belt, a channel frame for supporting the pulleys, adjustable belt take up and drive. They are recommended where a large amount of tramp iron is expected or where there may be limited access to the magnet for cleaning purposes.

Eriez are now able to offer a reduced delivery date on a variety of models of Suspended Electromagnet. Instead of the usual 8 week delivery, a 4 week despatch can now be offered for which more details, including prices, can be found on the Equipment for Immediate Sale section of the Eriez website (http://en-gb.eriez.com)

The process of converting solid waste to an efficient clean fuel while cutting out recyclable materials is one that positions Lundell as a leader in municipal waste technology. The Eriez Suspended Electromagnet has helped ensure this operation is as seamless as possible by simplifying their process and reducing conveyor maintenance to eliminate downtime and minimise maintenance costs.
