Eco-friendly Mechanized Coal Storage Facility, India

Dear All,

JSW Jaigarh Port, a greenfield All weather port on west coast of India (between Major ports of Mumbai & Goa) is developed by one of the biggest conglomerates of India, JSW Group.

This port has recently installed India's biggest coal storage facility in Port mainly for preventing the fugitive dust emission as well as stopping water ingress in coal during monsoon.

Eco-friendly Coal Storage System in Indian Port – JSW Jaigarh Port

Thermal coal remains India’s most important fuel to generate electricity. Majority of private sector ports alongwith few Major ports in India handles the coal. With increasing environmental concerns, storage and handling of coal in huge quantities has thrown new challenges, one of them being storing the coal in eco-friendly way.

JSW Group, a $11 Billion conglomerate and having business facilities in core sectors of steel, energy, infrastructure and cement, has put up a 1,200 MW power plant in Maharashtra state.

JSW Jaigarh Port, the first deep water, Greenfield all weather private port developed by JSW Group at a strategic location near Ratnagiri between Mumbai and Goa Ports on west coast of India (300 km south of Mumbai) has taken a major step in this regard to handle the coal for its 1200 MW power plant located next to Port.

Jaigarh Port has recently installed a covered storage facility with fully mechanized handling system for coal.

The shed of size 440m long x 104m wide (clear span) x 49m apex height has 6m high concrete retaining walls on either sides. It houses two coal stockpiles of 16m height, Stacker cum reclaimer of capacity 4000 / 2000 TPH and Yard conveyor. The shed construction involved 9000 CuM of concrete, 3500 MT of Space frame structure and 60000 SqM of Sheeting.

The shed structure is designed and supplied by a Chinese company, whereasJSW’s own profiled colour coated sheets have been used for roofing. The shed is equipped with Dust suppression and Fire fighting systems.

With the commissioning of this facility 0n December13, 2013, JSW Jaigarh Port has created a landmark in Indian Port sector for handling coal in eco-friendly manner.

The port has not restrained itself in going green by installing this facility only, but has also taken the initiative in power saving.

It has become a first port in India to install a CST (Controlled Start Transmission) drive in the conveyors. The port has installed a 2 x 350 KW drive in the yard conveyor located in this shed.

The CST drives are in existence globally for years, but not yet popular in India as this is the second successful commissioned drive.

The conveyor stacks 4000 TPH of coal while unloading from the ship and reclaims 2000 TPH of coal while feeding to the power plant. There are two drives in the head end as the conveyor has a unidirectional feed. For stacking, both the drives will run and cater to the 4000 TPH requirement. While reclaiming, both the drives will be used to start the conveyor and after 5 minutes, one CST drive will get disengaged and the motor will switch off, thereby saving huge power.

It is sure that the successful installations of such systems for handling the dusty cargo like coal, will set example and motivate other Ports operators to go the same way.

For single grade cargo, it is in range of 270000 to 280000 MT.
