Coal Handling Facilities

Telestack Limited Ltd continue to excel in providing innovative material handling solutions to its wide customer base. The overall aim of the company is to offer the ship loading/unloading, mining and quarrying industries the most innovative, value added and flexible mobile conveying systems on the world market today. Telestack materials handling systems are built to last, combining strength with the highest quality components available. Their success derives from achieving sustainable value for the client; using mobile bulk handling technology to enhance operational efficiency, minimise environmental impact and maximise product flexibility, serviceability and availability.

Telestack Limited have enjoyed great success when installing coal handling facilities throughout Europe and the UK. Most notably to date, is the installation of a TS 624 Tracked Telescopic Conveyor for Fergusson Coal in Scotland, which is being used to stockpile coal from a fixed conveyor system in their loading yard. This unique conveyor is the third TS 624 Tracked Telescopic conveyor purchased by Fergusson Coal, as explained by Ron Burnie (Fergusson Coal): “This is our third TS – 624 conveyor we have purchased, we were so impressed by the first TS 624 which we had installed earlier in the year, we were compelled to purchase another two units.” This particular customer rented the first tracked conveyor to test it and was so impressed with its capabilities and flexibility on site, they ended up purchasing three of these tracked conveyors for effectively stockpiling coal.

Prior to the purchase of the TS - 624, Fergusson Coal used a combination of small conveyors and loading shovels to manage their stockpiles, which was proving to be very inefficient. Other issues suffered the client included, dropping / spillage sized coal from loading shovel, degradation/compaction, downtime to move existing conveyor system, workload of shovel. From the purchase of the third TS 624 Tracked Telescopic conveyor, Fergusson Coal have identified drastic changes in relation to their productivity, quality of material and overall reduced costs. Fergusson Coal have benefited greatly from the use of this machine, it has increased productivity and reduced the downtime necessary to manoeuvre into position. The degradation of the material was a major issue for the stockpiling of the coal, the use of the telescopic and luffing (raise up / down) features of this conveyor ensures that the fall height from the product belt to the stockpile can be reduced and is totally flexible. This minimised the degradation of the coal, while still ensuring stockpiling capabilities of 600 – 900 TPH.

Instead of the many small conveyors and loading shovels, the use of the TS – 624 allowed for a centre point to allow effective loading and stockpiling of the coal. Also, with its easily maneuverability on the tracks, it allows for a larger stockpile capacity throughout the site. This is supported in views by Ron BurnieFergusson Coal as he states, “By stockpiling sized coal using our Telestack, we are minimising our drop whilst keeping as much size in the product as possible. With far less degradation of product and the versatility the telescopic conveyor brings to our process, the productivity on site has dramatically increased.”

Telestack Limited have also provided material handling solutions in shiploading and un-loading projects throughout the world. Most recently a coal handling facility for a Lisburn based company Conexpo (Northern Ireland) Ltd, who have doubled their fleet of shiploading and unloading equipment by purchasing another two machines from Omagh based bulk materials handling company Telestack International Ltd. Having recently taken ownership of another telescopic conveyor and ‘Charger’ hopper feeder conveyor the company has wasted no time in putting the machines to good use in their new purpose built materials handling facility at the Port of Belfast.

The primary task of the charger feeders and conveyors is to unload and stockpile coal imported from Scotland. Using the telescoping conveyor principle the company can choose to convey the material over a distance anywhere between 26metres and 100metres. From here the material is either loaded onto coaster size vessels or unloaded and stockpiled at the quayside.

The TS-542 Radial Telescopic model has a conveying rate of 500TPH and features an integrated sound-proof diesel generator set and tracked dolly unit, giving the conveyor “even greater mobility and flexibility”, according to Operations Director Jonathan McCluskey. “With two Telestack units I can further reduce the distance the wheel loader has to travel from the stockpile to the feeder during loading. I can then utilise the same units to convey and stockpile our imported material, whilst maximising the limited amount of space available at the quayside.”

A key advantage of the Telestack telescopic conveyors is that they can load and unload vessels using the same pivot position. When the Telestack has completed the loading of one vessel, it can simply be turned around in the other direction using its radial drive system and immediately be used to unload the next vessel.

The Charger hopper feeder conveyors play an equally important role in the Conexpo operation as they can be fed straight from the ship by excavator and in turn feed directly onto the telescopic conveyors. This results in major cost savings for the company by removing the need for quayside labour and wheel loaders during the unloading and stockpiling process. During ship loading operations the Charger feeder units are fed by wheel loader. The new Charger unit comes with a hopper capacity of 10m and is capable of handling up to 800 TPH.

Conexpo currently handle 750,000 Tonnes of granular products per year at their Belfast operation and the Telestacks machinery play an integral role in achieving this level of productivity.
