Underbin Screws
Dear competent persons!
With accordance to your experience I am interested of your opinion about various underbin systems for cereal .
I will be very grateful if you tell me about unloading grain bin systems and or where can I surf it.
The main interested questions what is the maximum unloading capacity
of the auger and maximum bin diameters?
Is it possible to make maintenance while the silo full?
What about grain cracking by the auger?
I am looking for alternative versions of the unloading bin
system without the under bin tunnel and I want to know
all advantages, limitations and drawbacks.
I will be very grateful if someone clearly tell about this matter.

You have not mentioned whether the cereal grains are for human or
animal consumption OR whether that have been processed/cooked
or whether they are destined for packaging or bagging for further inventory
and storage and that is a big IF or what issue.
If you are dealing with whole grains an underbin auger will work BUT
the issue is breakage of the whole grains and the amount of
degradation of product you can tolerate.
If you have to replace an auger assembly or bearing you have to be able to
close the bins discharge point completely.
If you are intent in building a drawdown gallery thet is an entlrely different animal
as far as construction of the system is concerned because you will have a
huge issue with rats and insect vermin.
Not to name drop BUT BEFORE YOU get any further with this you need to spend some
time on the www.Sukup.com site to learn more and also PM Lyn Bates if you have more
definitive NON DESIGN questions with regard to material flow patterns, cereal grain degradation
percentages, system wear over time and sanitation issues with finished grain cereals(if that is
what you are dealing with. ■
Discharging Grain
Screw feeders are commonly used for discharging grain, offering complete containment and flexible handling rates. Normal maintenance is confined to seals, that can be replaced in situ. It is good practice to adopt an integral design with the hopper to secure mass flow. Any reputable manufacturer will be pleased to advise on an apprpropriate specification for a defined duty. ■

The Olds elevator is effective for gentle vertical transport, but not for bin discharging. Damage reduction on feed out from bins is best secured by making sure that extraction takes place from the entire cross section of the hopper outlet and that screw lengths and speeds are not excessive. For grains of bulk density around 450 kg/M3, a 300 mm diameter screw at 60 rpm will discharge around 26 Te/hr. Multiple screws can be used for higher outputs, with inserts or offset discharge arrangements provided to reduce over-pressures and confined shear forces if delicate materials are to be handled. ■
