Fertilizer industry now uses innovative bulk materials heat exchanger

Heading for success: the BULK-X-CHANGE®

Weingarten, April 2008. – Developed by Coperion Waeschle GmbH & Co. KG, Weingarten, the BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger is now being used for the very first time by a fertilizer manufacturer for an inorganic product. Recently installed in a fertilizer production plant, which now operates at an increased output rate of 60 tonnes/hour, the heat exchanger serves to cool the fertilizer following the crystallizing and drying stages. Its purpose is to prevent the formation of lumps during silo storage and hence improve product storability and handling.

The final decision in favour of the innovative BULK-X-CHANGE® was preceded by a comprehensive series of tests. A trial heat exchanger made available by Coperion Waeschle was installed and operated parallel to an existing plate cooler. For several weeks, the prospective user tested freshly produced fertilizer under all conceivable operation conditions and could not have been more satisfied with the performance given by this bulk materials heat exchanger. As the final unit in a long process chain, the BULK-X-CHANGE® makes considerable savings possible not only in respect of capital investment costs but also as regards space requirements and energy and operating costs, especially when compared with conventional fluidized bed and drum coolers. Moreover, the BULK-X-CHANGE® contributes considerably to a reduction of the production plant's carbon footprint. Indeed, it is precisely on account of these advantages and benefits that this high-performance bulk materials heat exchanger is already well introduced into the plastics compounding and processing industries.

The BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger is a vertical tubular heat exchanger. The fertilizer to be cooled flows downwards through the smooth-walled tubes, while the cooling medium flows upwards on the outsides of the tubes. A specially developed product distribution plate ensures the trouble-free gravity feed of the fertilizer into the tubes by distributing it gently and evenly over the entire nest of tubes. Special technical features, such as a dry air counterflow system, for example, not only increase operating reliability but also – and by the same token – reduce maintenance costs. Thus the BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger ideally combines maximum efficiency with an absolute minimum of capital investment and operating costs. Thanks to these operating characteristics, the bulk materials heat exchanger is suitable for the cooling or heating of numerous other products, e.g. minerals, detergents, chemicals or foodstuffs.

The Coperion Group, together with the companies Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer, Coperion Waeschle, Coperion Keya, Coperion Hartmann and 20 sales and service companies, is an international market and technology leader for compounding systems and bulk-material systems. Coperion designs, supplies and maintains systems, machines and components for the plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, minerals and food industries. In the 2007 financial year, Coperion achieved sales to the tune of 480 million euros, and employs around 2,100 staff as at 31.12.2007.
