internal motorized head pulleys

i am considering the switch to motorized headpulleys on 6 small cross belts at the end of our screens. i would like a little feedback please.
Three of these belts are 30" and 3 are 36" belt speeds on all range from 125 to 150 fpm, the lengths range from 18' to 22' all run horizontal with 20 degree troughing rolls,,, 7.5 hp on the 30" and 10 hp on the 36's,,, i am in washington state so extreme heat probably won't be a problem,,,

any feedback would be great,,, thanks

Hello Kasey,

The information does not make clear whether you intend to use motorised drum pulley for driving the cross belt conveyor of the magnetic separator or main belt conveyor under the cross belt magnetic separator.
If it is for cross belt; you may check the interference between magnetic flux emanating from magnet of cross belt and magnets of motorised drum. The flux interference can affect the working of both. The manufacturer of the magnetic separator will have the data about the mutual effect with reference to their distance.

Kasey:

Be a little careful. Pulley internal motor systems have advantages of saving precious space but do require added maintenance design considerations. Poor access to internal bearings and motor armature and stator assembly, and rotating power conductor leads to motor, motor and bearing seals, and their grounding need special design attention.

Motorized Pulleys

I have used motorized conveyor pulleys on short conveyors up to 100 feet. I have a 10 HP drive on a 24" conveyor carrying 150 TPH of road salt that has been running for about 10 years with zero maintenance.

They have their applications and can give you long service life if select and install properly but you need to do your homework and work with an application engineer from a reputable manufacturer before making your final selection.

Good luck

thanks for the responses,,, i had a hard drive meltdown so the laptop is in the shop,,,

these converoys are all on the end of two screens in a basalt rock quarry. there are no magnetic seperators involved . the main thing i was trying to get away from was the constant gearbox ,motor, v belt , and bearing upkeep,.

i have seen several newer designs on these motorized headpulleys, they seem to be a great answer,,,

Take a look at Dorris Company's direct drive shaft mount reducers. The direct drive eleminates sheaves, belts, and belt guards by providing ratio's from 5:1 up in increments of 5. While you still have the reducer, you elimanate the concerns of the motorized drum pulley.

thanks,, i have looked into several different direct couple units. i guess the zero weight hanging in the side of the conveyor apeals to me ,and also all bearings are internal . i am going to the mine expo and the con-agg shows in vegas this year to get more info before i start a retro fit.

A word from expirience, try to use the same belt speed and HP on all these conveyors even if it means some over design. Then one spare can be utilized for all conveyors. Delivery is sometimes a problem with these units.

that is a great point larry, since i overbuilt in the begining ,and after years of monitoring amp loads i believe 7.5 hp will be plenty.

this brings up another question, will these internal units be more efficient? they are all geardrive and the hp. loss should be less? correct?
