Company Presentation:

Solex Thermal Science, Inc., until March 31, 2008 known as Bulkflow Technologies, Inc. is internationally recognized as a leading supplier of coolers & heaters for bulk solids. The technology has consistently delivered impressive results in a wide variety of applications. The company is also backed by an experienced team of people who have been involved in the development & application of the technology around the world.

The Solex Heat Exchanger was originally developed by Cominco Fertilizers (now Agrium Inc.) for cooling granular urea at its fertilizer plant in Canada, located near Calgary. This innovative technology was then marketed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. until 1999 when the division was acquired by its employees in a management buy-out and the name was subsequently changed to Bulkflow Technologies Inc.

As a result of extensive development & testing, the Solex Heat Exchanger technology has been successfully applied in more than 150 installations worldwide. Our customers have included fertilizer producers, chemical companies, detergent producers, plastics and resin manufacturers, sugar producers & companies in the sand & minerals industry.

Solex Thermal Science, Inc. has its corporate headquarters and a product testing facility in Calgary, AB, Canada, along with European offices in Germany & Belgium. Technical sales engineers provide worldwide support .

TECHNOLOGY

The SOLEX HEAT EXCHANGER operates by combining the principles of mass flow of bulk solids with conventional heat exchanger technology. Simply put, it is a heat exchanger for heating or cooling bulk solids.

The equipment consists of a number of vertical, closely spaced, hollow stainless steel plates. Bulk solids or powders pass slowly downward between the plates as heat transfer fluid flows through the interior of the plates to heat or cool the material by conduction.

Bulk solids are typically a poor conductor of heat, so a long residence time is needed to achieve the required heating or cooling. The vertical configuration of the equipment provides for a large heat transfer area in a compact unit, resulting in a very efficient design. Unlike rotary drums or fluid bed coolers where air is in direct contact with the product, this indirect method of heat transfer eliminates emissions and the need for costly air handling equipment. The slow movement through the heat exchanger eliminates particle degradation and results in a more uniform temperature distribution

Mass flow design ensures uniform heat transferMass flow is a critical element in the successful design of the Bulkflow Heat Exchanger. To achieve uniform heat transfer, the bulk solids should be moving with uniform velocity over the full cross section of the unit. A specially designed discharge feeder is mounted at the bottom of the equipment to control the product feed-rate and create mass flow though the heat exchanger.

LABORATORY TESTING

Laboratory flowability test
Solex Thermal Science, Inc. conducts material testing at its lab facilities in Calgary, Canada and Winterswijk, The Netherlands. The testing helps to determine:

• flow characteristics of the bulk solids
• optimum spacing of the heat exchanger plates
• the most effective type of discharge device; and
• thermal conductivity of a bulk sample.

The test unit is a representative model of the Solex Heat Exchanger, equipped with exchanger plates of the same type and construction as used in the full sized equipment. A vibrating feeder with a variable frequency drive controls the flow rate of product through the test unit. The walls of the bin are transparent to observe flow patterns. The plate spacing is adjustable and staff conduct tests to determine the optimum plate spacing for each specific bulk solid.

Different discharge devices are also tested to determine the best approach for each particular bulk material. The best discharger will create mass flow at a flow rate within the desired range, ensuring materials flow smoothly through the heat exchanger plate bank.

Thermal conductivity is a measure of the heat transfer capability of the material and is dependent on the type of material, particle size distribution and packing factor. This value is seldom available for bulk materials and must be tested. It is then used in the design of the Solex Heat Exchanger to determine the required heat exchange area.

Test samples should be representative of the bulk solids that will be processed by the equipment. Material Safety Data Sheets must be included with the sample, in accordance with federal and provincial regulations. Testing is conducted for a small fee, primarily to cover the costs of return shipping or disposal. For more information, please request a copy of our product testing literature or contact us directly.

Powder & Bulk Solids Chicago 2008

Bulkflow Technologies is now Solex Thermal Science, Inc.

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada - A new corporate name and brand identity will be unveiled by Bulkflow Technologies Ltd. at the ‘Powder Show’ section of the Process Technology Expo International Exhibition (PTXi) at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois on May 6-8, 2008, Booth #2511.

According to the company, the new corporate name will more accurately reflect the position of the company in the market and add value and strength to the brand.

Specialists in the science of heating, cooling and drying free flowing bulk solids, Bulkflow Technologies, will have a working model of a Heat Exchanger at Booth #2511. The free demonstration will show the principles of the science and explain how the technology works. Handout material on the numerous benefits of the technology will also be available.

The Heat Exchanger, a sophisticated combination of the two sciences of indirect heat transfer and the mass flow of bulk solids, is designed for indirect heating and cooling of free flowing powders and bulk solids.

About the Heat Exchanger
The Bulkflow Heat Exchanger consists of a series of several closely spaced, hollow fully welded heat exchanger plates. Product moves slowly by gravity between the plates in mass flow. Cooling or heating media circulates internally between the plates’ dimples and counter-current to product flow for higher thermal efficiency. A mass flow discharger controls the product flow for higher thermal efficiency.

Unlike many other types of bulk solid coolers, the system does not require large volumes of air to operate and instead lets gravity do the work to greatly reduce power consumption. Each system is individualized to match the exact manufacturing requirements of the customer so that it easily integrates with existing equipment.

Other benefits of the science include zero air emissions, high thermal efficiency, low energy consumption, modular construction for easy expansion, a compact design that fits into tight spaces and lower installed capital cost. A gentle improved product flow prevents product attrition, the potential for caking in storage and improved packaging.

Bulkflow has more than 250 successful applications in more than 30 countries worldwide. The company has numerous applications in the chemical, fertilizer, plastic and resin, polymer, detergent, catalyst, mineral, grain, biosolid and food industry.

The company has offices in the United States and subsidiary operations in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. It serves the Asian market through strategically located dealers in numerous countries. It is represented in Latin American by Ventura Process Equipment Company with offices in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela.

Solex Thermal Science, Inc.

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA - Bulkflow Technologies, Inc. has changed its corporate name to Solex Thermal Science, Inc. to more accurately reflect the strengths and value the company offers to its customers. The name change became effective March 31, 2008.

Founded in 1999 as Bulkflow Technologies, Inc. Solex Thermal Science, Inc. remains a privately held, primarily employee-owned, company specializing in the science of heating, cooling and drying of free flowing bulk solids such as sugar, salt, fertilizer, chemicals, plastics, biosolids, minerals and many other types of granular, crystals and powder. The original cooler technology was invented more than 20 years ago and was acquired by Bulkflow in 1999.

“Solex maintains the same ownership group - its employees - and the same management group,” said Neville Jordison, President of Solex Thermal Science, Inc. “More than 90 percent of our employees share a vested interest in our company.

Nothing has changed except our corporate name and brand identity which now more accurately portrays the unique knowledge, expertise and product that we offer to our customers.”

Along with the new corporate name, Solex also introduced a new slogan that emphasizes the corporate position as world leaders in the science of bulk solids heat exchange and advanced technological development. The slogan, “World Leaders in the Science of Heating and Cooling Bulk Solids,” accurately summarizes the capabilities and position of the company in the market.

“The world leading innovations produced by Solex come from a committed team of employees that have extensive knowledge and experience dealing with complex heat exchange problems involving bulk solid materials”, Jordison added. “We have experience engineering heat exchanger solutions for bulk solids in a wide variety of industries and applications world-wide. Some of the world leading companies trust Solex with the science of heating, cooling and drying their bulk solids”.

Jordison emphasized that the Solex heat exchanger technology is a patented technology with unique benefits. “Its design is inherently simple, yet offers the benefits of leading edge technology – it uses up to 90% less energy than competing technologies, contains no moving parts, prevents creation of dust and emissions, and is ultra compact. This technology solves a host of issues commonly experienced in the process of heating and cooling bulk solids”.

Jordison also noted, “When you deal with Solex for cooling, heating or drying of bulk solids, you get more than a heat exchanger. You get a custom engineered solution that is designed using advanced thermal and flow property evaluation methods. Solex uses proprietary thermal modeling software that accurately predicts product temperatures resulting in a heat exchanger design that comes with guaranteed thermal performance. It’s a science. This was the main reason we needed a new corporate name and brand identity, one that reflects our technology, experience, capabilities and guaranteed thermal performance. Solex Thermal Science, Inc. does that.”

The Solex Heat Exchanger Described
The Solex heat exchanger technology is designed for indirect heating and cooling of free flowing powders and bulk solids. The design consists of a vertical bank of several closely spaced heat exchanger plates. As product passes slowly downward, by gravity, between the series of vertical hollow heat exchanger plates, cooling (or heating) fluid flows through the plates to cool (or heat) the material by conduction. A mass flow discharge feeder regulates the product flow and creates uniform product velocity as the material passes through the cooler.
